Family sells land for state park
A multigenerational Texas family sold six hundred fifty acres of land in Henderson County to become a future state park.
The property represents the longest continuous stretch of shoreline on Lake Palestine. It features pine woods, wetlands, and a pecan orchard for future visitors to enjoy during camping trips or kayaking excursions on the water.
Sam Pollard is the current owner and president of Texas Pecan Nursery. He said the land is part of his soul. He wanted to leave a lasting legacy for people to enjoy in the outdoors for generations ahead in time coming now.
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation purchased the site for one million dollars. They will hold it until state authorities can afford to buy the property officially from the nonprofit organization managing the land for public use now.
Officials plan to open the park in phases starting with guided access. They will eventually provide full day and overnight access after inviting public comments to discuss options for the future development of the new recreational area.
