FDA approves weekly generic hormone patch for women

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved a new generic hormone therapy patch for women yesterday.

The agency authorized the first generic version of Climara Pro for weekly application on women with an intact uterus. This specific transdermal system contains estradiol and levonorgestrel to treat moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms due to menopause effectively.

The approved generic product is therapeutically equivalent to the original brand name medication indicated for preventing postmenopausal osteoporosis in eligible patients. It combines hormonal ingredients in one patch to reduce risks associated with estrogen use alone.

Acting FDA Commissioner Kyle Diamantas stated that this approval makes effective treatment more accessible for patients facing menopause. Director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research noted that once-weekly dosing helps patients manage their care better than daily oral medications.

The new patch offers a convenient alternative to daily pills which may help patients adhere to their treatment plans. Common adverse reactions include application site reactions, vaginal bleeding, breast pain, and various other side effects reported in studies.
