New scheme helps solar farms aid wildlife in UK

Wild Power launched a certification scheme to encourage UK solar farm developers to build better habitats for wildlife near power stations.

The new plan checks how renewable sites protect land and gives awards to those meeting strict biodiversity rules for nature recovery. Only two farms in the UK have received this official approval for their conservation work.

Wild Power director Joe Arafa compares the stamp to fair trade. Well-managed solar farms can help solve both climate and nature crises simultaneously. This approach transforms sites into refuges where hares, birds, and insects can thrive among the panels.

The Dunmow site in Essex became the second UK winner in September. It projects a 65% increase in habitat biodiversity units.

Ecologist Guy Parker planted species-rich grassland and installed bird boxes. He turned a bland arable field into a productive haven for wildlife.

Thrive Renewables acquired the site in May 2025. They plan annual ecological surveys to track changes in breeding birds and pollinators over time.

Future projects will be scrutinized through a biodiversity lens. This ensures lasting improvements in the countryside for decades.
