Nine funders pledge money to save threatened species

Nine private organizations announced a major funding commitment in Armenia to help recover the world's most threatened species.

Announced on October 16, 2026, the Species Recovery Alliance directs over five hundred million dollars toward conservation actions over the next five years. This large coordinated effort aims to reverse the decline of imperiled wildlife and restore healthy ecosystems globally.

More than thirty-one thousand species are classified as extinct in the wild or critically endangered according to the IUCN Red List. Over ten % of these populations have fewer than fifty individuals remaining, making urgent intervention necessary to prevent total loss.

Seventeen governments including Colombia and Armenia launched the Coalition of Action to Recover Endangered Species alongside this private funding announcement. These separate initiatives share a common ambition to ensure threatened species receive the resources they need to recover successfully.

Members will coordinate investments and share knowledge rather than pooling funds to support effective recovery actions at the required scale. They will track outcomes using established conservation metrics to measure the success of their combined global efforts.

“Conservationists have shown that species can be brought back from the brink.”

Cristián Samper, managing director and leader of nature solutions at the Bezos Earth Fund
