Perseverance rover drives past Opportunity distance
The Perseverance rover reached a major milestone by driving past the total distance of Opportunity on Mars.
The image shows tracks and rocks captured by a navigation camera aboard the spacecraft on October 11, 2026. This specific drive covered nearly three hundred feet during the two thousand sixth Martian day of the mission journey.
The mission passed a significant threshold by exceeding the total driving distance of the Opportunity rover during its long exploration period on the red planet surface. Opportunity logged twenty eight point zero six miles throughout its fifteen year operational lifetime on Mars.
Jet Propulsion Laboratory built and manages operations for the agency in Pasadena, California under the Science Mission Directorate. The laboratory works on behalf of the agency as part of the broader Mars Exploration Program portfolio.
This achievement demonstrates the continued success and reliability of robotic exploration technology in the harsh environment of another world. The data helps scientists understand the capabilities required for future long distance travel across planetary surfaces.
