Personalized walking changes reduce knee arthritis pain without surgery

Researchers found that adjusting foot angles during walking significantly reduced knee arthritis pain and slowed cartilage damage in a recent clinical trial.

Participants learned to walk with specific foot positions that lowered pressure on vulnerable inner knee sections. This technique helps during normal daily movement activities like climbing stairs or sitting down and standing up again repeatedly throughout the day.

After one full year of training, those receiving personalized instructions reported an average pain improvement of 2.5 points on a scale of ten. This proved significantly better than the 1.3 point improvement seen in the placebo group.

Scans revealed that cartilage health markers deteriorated more slowly in the treatment group. This suggests that reducing mechanical stress on the joint helps preserve the protective tissue that cushions bone ends and allows smooth movement.

This approach addresses excessive joint loading that painkillers cannot fix. It offers a non-invasive alternative for people who might eventually need joint replacement surgery. Or it helps those suffering from long-term disability caused by the progressive disease affecting roughly 22% of adults over 40 years old.
