Potassium binder reduces dietary burden for dialysis patients

A new clinical trial shows a potassium binder lessens the daily burden of dietary restrictions for people on dialysis.

Outpatients receiving thrice-weekly maintenance hemodialysis were assigned to two different groups for the eight-week study period. One group got sodium zirconium cyclosilicate plus standardized nutritional counseling while the other received counseling alone.

Those taking the drug with nutrition advice showed better quality of life regarding dietary limits than the control group. The medication also dropped pre-dialysis serum potassium levels more than the group without the binder.

Exploratory data showed fruit intake rose without raising total dietary potassium while kidney disease quality of life scores improved. No major safety issues or fatalities occurred in either group throughout the trial duration.

The investigators stressed that individualized dietary assessment and regular potassium monitoring remain essential for managing overall nutritional quality. Using binding agents can help manage potassium levels when strict dieting proves too difficult for the patient.
