Researchers test urea production system in field

Scientists at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona have commissioned a pilot system in Viladecans to create urea fertilizer directly in the field using renewable energy sources.

The experimental installation operates an electrochemical reactor powered by biobatteries and solar panels. It converts carbon dioxide and nitrates into useful nitrogen fertilizer for agriculture. This process offers an alternative to conventional industrial methods that consume power.

Professor Gonzalo Guirado coordinated the CONFETI project which moved the technology to a real setting. The team validated the devices during recent heavy rainfall while studying performance under specific environmental circumstances.

The system combines three complementary developments including an electronic management unit. This unit coordinates energy from microbial activity and solar panels. It allows the recovery of nitrates that crops do not absorb.

Researchers are now characterizing the integrated components to identify technical issues. They must address these problems before applying the method commercially. Further study is required to assess the full economic viability.
