Teams rescued fifty-three orangutans from Borneo fires

Conservation teams rescued fifty-three orangutans from destructive wildfires burning across the island of Borneo recently.

Severe blazes continue to burn across the land, putting air quality at risk and destroying food sources for wildlife. These fires threaten critically endangered orangutans by ruining their essential habitat and creating dangerous conditions for all.

An eighteen-year nonprofit focuses on primate rescue and has saved fifty-three orangutans from the flames. Many of these animals were rewilded to other forest preserves within the country for their protection and safety.

Dr Karmele Llano Sanchez comforts a young orangutan named Irene in a photo showing her stress. She noted the animal looked very thin after likely going days without food in this devastated forest landscape where fires raged.

Many survivors remain under veterinary care at the Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre while the team patrols affected areas. The centre is now full, so they ask for money from the public to support their critical work helping animals recover from these tragic events.

“Baby Irene is just one tiny example of their hard work”

Gavin Bruce, CEO of International Animal Rescue
