Turtles return home after NSW restores wetland flows
Freshwater turtles saved from a dried pool in western New South Wales are now going back to their natural home after officials fixed water levels.
Ten broad-shelled species and three Murray River varieties were put back into the Gingham pool in the Gwydir region last month. This move followed a decision to restore water after the government stopped flows previously.
April saw a rescue operation begin when scientists warned of a terrible disaster happening. WaterNSW halted environmental water release after a private owner complained, causing death for turtles, birds, frogs and sheep.
Thirty-nine animals went to Taronga zoo in Dubbo after public anger grew over footage of workers digging through mud to find survivors. May brought new laws protecting WaterNSW from lawsuits while water delivery resumed.
Half a year later the Gingham pool is full again and thirteen healthy turtles went back to live there. Another twenty-four remain in care and should return soon after final health checks are completed by staff members there.
