Wildlife Trusts buy huge Northumberland estate for nature
Wildlife Trusts successfully purchased a massive estate in Northumberland after raising thirty million pounds to secure the land for conservation efforts.
David Attenborough praised the public for helping achieve this ambitious goal of restoring a landscape where communities and wildlife thrive together side by side. He thanked supporters for their generous contributions to the project.
The Rothbury estate covers nearly fifteen square miles and contains diverse habitats including hills, woodlands, and farm fields that have never been sold together in England. This purchase represents the largest single land sale in the country for over thirty years and offers a rare chance for major ecological restoration.
Mike Pratt described the campaign as a source of hope. He expressed deep humility about the seventeen million pounds contributed directly by ordinary members of the public. He emphasized that the group must honor this support by ensuring visitors can enjoy close encounters with local wildlife in the coming years.
Volunteers are already working hard to install acoustic monitors and count earthworms. They aim to better understand the health of the soil and the animals living within the land. Sophie Bulgin stated that the overwhelming enthusiasm from these dedicated volunteers has completely surpassed her expectations for the project.
“The opportunity to bring the vision of a landscape where nature and people thrive side by side can become a reality.”
