Citizens watch over shark trapped in canal
Self-appointed guardians in Busan take turns watching over a trapped shark to protect it from crowds.
In the southern port city, a dedicated group patrols the waterfront at night to keep visitors away from the animal. These self-appointed guardians include many content creators who livestream the event while calling out people using bright lights near the water.
The female dusky shark has remained stuck since late September and experts warn that sudden light flashes can cause her physical harm. Authorities have attempted multiple times to guide the creature back to the ocean, yet they have failed to free her.
For now the shark stays in the waterway, attracting large day crowds while a few men guard the park after sunset. They monitor the area closely and broadcast their concerns about the rude actions they see happening nearby.
Specialists say her body functions drop below 15C and survival becomes precarious at 11C. Local officials believe the canal will hit such cold levels once November arrives in the middle of the month. This cooling trend might encourage the shark to move out eventually.
