Diabetes remission found with diet and exercise in trial

A new clinical trial shows that pairing restricted eating with supervised physical activity helped many younger adults achieve remission from type 2 diabetes.

Researchers tested this intensive lifestyle program at three centers in England and Canada involving adults aged eighteen to forty-five years. The study enrolled ninety-six participants with early-onset diabetes who were not using insulin injections for their condition.

One group received standard medical care while the other followed a strict plan including eight hundred to nine hundred calories daily. Participants also performed aerobic and resistance exercises twice per week during the first twelve weeks of the intervention period.

After twenty-four weeks, 54% of those following the program achieved remission compared to only 4% in the control group. The intensive group lost an average of seven point five kilograms more weight than those receiving usual care alone.

Importantly, the study preserved muscle mass during rapid weight loss by incorporating resistance training into the intensive phase. This approach may prevent future weight regain and reduce the risk of sarcopenia associated with losing lean tissue.
