Melbourne man donates at eighty five centres nationwide
A Melbourne police officer recently donated blood at every single donation centre located across the entire nation of Australia.
Trevor Bergman achieved this milestone by giving plasma in Canberra to complete his eighty fifth and final location task. He started donating blood when he was eighteen years old after getting the idea during a holiday trip ten years ago.
About one hundred fifty Australians carry the anti D antibody which helps protect nearly forty eight thousand pregnant women each year from serious newborn diseases. This special antibody prevents immune responses that could target baby blood when mother and child have different blood types.
Mr Bergman made five hundred forty five donations in total and recalled being turned away once in Albany for having a sniffle. He accepted this rejection because he believes blood supply security requires donors to be perfectly healthy at all times.
Governor General Sam Mostyn joined him in Canberra for his final donation and celebrated the fact that he had finished. This event highlighted the increasing demand for blood supplies which reached their lowest point in ten years recently.
