FDA approves new cancer drug for head and neck cases

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Rybrevant Faspro for treating adults with advanced head and neck cancer.

This specific treatment is for patients whose disease progressed after platinum-based chemotherapy and immunotherapy failed to work effectively anymore. The drug is not indicated for throat cancer linked to human papillomavirus infections.

Approval relied on trial results showing the percentage of patients responding was more than twice that of existing therapies available today. This marks the first approval in ten years for this specific patient group who had received prior platinum-based chemotherapy.

In a study with one hundred two people, the new medication showed an overall response rate of 42% for the new medication. Among those who responded, 56% experienced a response lasting six months or longer against previous therapies.

The FDA required confirmatory studies to verify clinical benefit since it is not yet confirmed regarding long-term outcomes for patients. Prescribing information includes warnings for hypersensitivity, interstitial lung disease, dermatologic reactions, and harm to an unborn baby during use.

“This therapy offers patients and their physicians a new option with the potential to make a real difference in people's lives.”

Angelo De Claro, director of the FDA's Oncology Center of Excellence
