Man cleans garbage pile near Atlantic Avenue in Queens
Joshua Service cleaned a large pile of garbage located under a subway bridge in Crown Heights recently.
Queens resident Service recorded video footage of the waste while commuting by rail recently.
Service listened to that advice and returned with gloves and a rake to tackle the problem directly himself. He filled ten trash bags after working for about two hours at that specific location.
Department officials later found a homeless resident nearby and moved him to a shelter safely. Several neighbors asked if he worked for the city departments before he explained he was just a concerned New Yorker.
He wanted to improve the state of his city without waiting for official permission first. The work took about two hours during which he determined others had turned the area into a convenient garbage dump.
City Councilmember Chi Ossé intended to recognize Service for his helpful actions at the exact spot he cleaned up last Friday. The community saw this act as a positive step forward for the neighborhood environment.
Neighbors expressed admiration for his dedication and passionate approach to solving the local waste issue. His initiative demonstrated that individuals can make a difference without waiting for official help or approval from authorities.
“People were telling me, 'Oh, how about you stop making videos about it, and go clean it yourself?' So I did,”
