New kidney cancer drug combo boosts survival rates

A phase 2 trial at Roswell Park showed combining bevacizumab and pazopanib significantly extended survival for patients with advanced kidney cancer.

A nationwide study involving fifty-one patients found that alternating these two drugs offered strong benefits for those with favorable risk profiles compared to standard treatments alone. The trial was conducted across five academic centers to test this specific combination of targeted therapies.

Saby George states that the regimen was safe and effective for untreated patients while delaying treatment resistance to prolong progression-free survival significantly. This approach proved comparable to or better than current immunotherapy combinations specifically for favorable-risk groups.

When used individually, median progression-free survival is only nine months. But the combined therapy raised this to twenty-four months for the full group. Patients with favorable risks achieved an even higher median overall survival of seventy-six months.

This new strategy may help patients who cannot receive immunotherapy or live in resource-limited countries where costs are a major concern. It represents a significant step forward using agents that stop the protein feeding tumor blood vessels.
