Six baby dolphins born in Cambodia raise population to 118

Six baby Irrawaddy dolphins were born in Cambodia this year, bringing the total population to one hundred eighteen individuals.

The Mekong River hosts these sacred creatures which drive local tourism revenue for nearby communities along the waterway today. Their numbers have fallen sharply since the nineteen nineties due to hunting and fishing gear entanglement issues.

Tourists visit deep pools in Kratie province to see dorsal fins crest above the water while boat drivers guide them carefully. This activity provides essential income for families who depend on the river for their daily livelihoods and cultural traditions.

Experts warn that over one hundred sixty operational dams alter river hydrology and degrade forests dolphins need for food sources. Illegal gillnets remain a primary threat despite bans in protected zones along the one hundred eighty kilometer stretch of water.

River guards patrol the area but earn very low wages while facing physical risks from armed illegal fishers protecting their operations. Conservation groups support local efforts to balance community needs with strict protection rules for these unique aquatic mammals.
