New science helps snow leopards share mountains with humans

Innovative science and community efforts now help snow leopards share Asian mountain landscapes with human neighbors.

Recent government data from 2025 indicates roughly 397 snow leopards inhabit Nepal alongside other predators. These animals coexist largely by targeting different prey species instead of competing for the same food sources in the valley.

Researcher Narayan Prasad Koju stated that keeping wild ungulate populations strong is vital to stop predators from hunting farm animals. If natural food drops, all three predators turn to livestock, causing retaliatory killings and destabilizing the entire system.

Rodney Jackson said conservationists must shift focus from counting animals to helping herding families who suffer losses. He added that constant conflict between people and wildlife damages trust among locals struggling to live near the cats.

In central Kyrgyzstan, a large protected area was created to allow approximately 300 snow leopards room to adjust. This zone plans for future climate changes while supporting sustainable grazing practices for nearby residents to ensure long term survival.
