Nine orangutans find new forest home after Indonesia fires

Conservationists released nine rescued orangutans into a protected forest in West Kalimantan province, Indonesia, on Thursday.

The animals suffered burns and starvation during devastating wildfires that ravaged their original habitat in August and September of this year. They required weeks of careful nursing to regain strength before moving to their new location.

Rescuers carried the primates in suspended cages through difficult terrain to reach the safe Batu Nyambu protected area where food is abundant. This specific site was chosen because its forests remain largely untouched and offer the best chance for rebuilding their lives.

Four of the mothers were found to be pregnant again during final health checks, providing hope for future generations of these endangered species. One expectant mother named Mama Ocha will have the team stay nearby to ensure she can safely deliver her baby.

Veterinarians noted the animals were extremely stressed while in quarantine. So they decided release could not be delayed any longer for their well-being. The team traveled by car and kayak for hours on foot to reach the dense forest release site successfully.
