Students refurbish donated car for disabled veteran in Minneapolis
Minneapolis students refurbished a donated car for disabled veteran Robert Hanson through the Recycled Rides for Schools program.
The veteran spent over two years without personal transportation due to severe health problems that made public transit difficult. His condition included severe asthma and fibromyalgia issues that appeared after his separation from the military service in nineteen ninety seven.
Students at Dunwoody College of Engineering rebuilt the vehicle after receiving it from Allstate following a previous collision. The automotive collision and refinishing school students applied their skills to restore the two thousand twenty Hyundai Elantra for its new owner.
Hennepin County welfare service referred Hanson to the program after he struggled to manage his daily life without reliable vehicle access. The organization helped connect him with students who restored the car to working condition so he could regain his independence again.
Hanson described the gift as a big time game changer that allowed him to shop at reasonable places and buy food in bulk. He expressed deep gratitude for the students and organizations involved in making this transformative vehicle available for his use immediately.
