Texas janitor honored with school named after her
Marilyn Hampton received an elementary school named in her honor after thirty nine years of service at a Texas district.
The seventy six year old custodian worked nearly four decades for Aubrey Independent School District while helping students and buying supplies. She also worked ticket booths at football games and encouraged generations of staff members daily.
Superintendent Dr Shannon Saylor invited her to speak about issues before revealing a different reason for the recent school board meeting gathering. She asked Hampton to unroll a small red carpet that displayed the name of the new elementary school.
Hampton admitted she could not stop crying when she realized the district planned to name the building after her humble former role. The superintendent praised her as a role model who taught colleagues to work hard and overcome challenges with kindness.
She eventually understood that God placed her exactly where she needed to be to help children smile every single day. The community ensured her story would remain a reminder that making a difference does not require a fancy title or degree.
“One day I thought, Marilyn, God put you where you are supposed to be”
