Tamil Nadu villagers ban fireworks to protect bats

Residents in several Tamil Nadu villages have banned firecrackers during Diwali to ensure the safety of local bat colonies that roost in their trees.

These communities view the flying animals as friendly neighbors rather than pests. Families have built unique traditions around feeding the creatures and keeping the night quiet to avoid disturbing their natural resting patterns.

Bats play a vital role in spreading seeds and pollinating flowers. This work supports the growth of trees and other vegetation throughout the surrounding landscape for all wildlife to enjoy and use as shelter and food sources.

In Kazhuperumpakkam, families originally started feeding bats near a tamarind tree. The local panchayat later officially banned firecrackers for the entire village community to protect them from harm and noise disturbance.

Schoolchildren in Kittampalayam now learn about bat conservation and help spread the message. Students participated in awareness rallies alongside conservationists to encourage hundreds of families to celebrate a quieter festival without any loud explosions or flashes of light.

“Villagers avoid crackers because the noise disturbs the bats.”
