Texas School named for longtime custodian Miss Marilyn

Aubrey Independent School District renamed a new elementary school for custodian Marilyn Hampton in Aubrey.

Marilyn Hampton worked thirty nine years as the district custodian since graduating high school first among seven siblings. Her colleagues say she went far beyond emptying trash bins to help struggling students study for tests.

Superintendent Dr Shannon Saylor told WFAA News that Hampton is truly Aubrey ISD in many important ways. Now at age seventy six she continues helping care for infants and toddlers at the Early Bird Learning Center.

The school board invited Hampton to a meeting about opening challenges for a new K five school. They asked her to present a red carpet with her name stitched into the fabric for the ceremony.

This gesture replaced standard interview questions with a special honor for the janitor. Hampton was deeply moved by this unexpected recognition from her community.

When she saw the words Marilyn Hampton Elementary School she began crying and thanked everyone for the honor. She said it was an honor she never thought she would see in her lifetime.

Her reaction showed how much the gesture meant to her after years of feeling inferior. The district wanted to celebrate her unique contributions to student life.
