Professor helps children eat and study for free

Professor Chandrashekhar Kundu started a program in West Bengal to help children eat well and study for free.

Nearly ten years ago, the professor saw a girl eating discarded biryani while her brother fought off stray dogs nearby. This sight stayed with him after throwing away leftover food at his son's birthday party that night.

He started studying food waste and gained the nickname Foodman. He now serves meals to almost one hundred eighty kids living in three separate villages. This effort aims to stop waste while ensuring hungry children receive proper nutrition every day.

Chandrashekhar realized access to food was only one challenge faced by many children from households doing hard labor like digging stone or taking daily pay jobs. Without guidance, even students who attended school struggled to keep up with the required work. Many lacked academic support at home.

With help from supporters, he organized dinners for the children and taught them about education. He wanted them to see possibilities that lay ahead. Local teachers and volunteers now help children access regular learning support closer to their homes in many communities.
