Deputy carries baby while community saves everyone

A sheriff deputy carried an infant through floodwaters in Colorado while neighbors and volunteers worked together to save the entire family.

Photographer Jerry McBride captured Deputy Brayton Thurber moving a baby during historic flooding at the Junction Creek Mobile Home Park. Rising water levels turned the situation into an urgent race against time for every resident trapped in the area.

Thurber had previously identified a specific family as high priority because their trailer sat in a vulnerable location. He knew the young mother and her infant daughter needed immediate assistance before the dangerous conditions became even more severe.

When deputies arrived, the mother and her brother gathered essential supplies like oxygen equipment while Thurber helped the little girl escape. Everyone worked together quickly to move critical items out of the home without time for any elaborate planning strategies.

First responders worked through the night while volunteers delivered clean water and helped neighbors who required special assistance during this difficult emergency. The collective effort ensured that no resident was left behind as the community fought to protect everyone living in the area.
