Retirees find love again at gym after losing spouses
Two widowed retirees met at a Birmingham gym and fell in love again at age eighty-eight.
Barbara Thompson moved into a retirement village ten years ago after her husband died from cancer. Fred Jenkins lost his wife three years ago and began coaching her during workouts. Both said they never expected to find a partner after their long relationships ended.
Barbara attended the gym three times weekly while her friend stopped coming to join her. Fred started coaching her exercises, and their friendship quickly grew into something much deeper and stronger. They now spend almost every day together doing various activities like gardening and dancing.
The pair took their very first trip as a couple recently. They play darts and dominoes regularly while hitting the gym three times each week. Fred has done many new things since meeting Barbara that he never tried before.
They choose to keep living in separate apartments to maintain their personal independence. This arrangement allows them to enjoy time together while still having their own private spaces. Barbara believes their story shows it is never too late for happiness.
