Nonprofit raises millions for Atlanta eviction relief fund
An Atlanta nonprofit has raised sixteen point five million dollars to provide eviction relief for thousands of families facing housing insecurity in Georgia.
The Star-C Program began as a small campaign. It now supports over five thousand families who needed money to stay in their apartments during difficult times. This organization helps residents keep their homes when they face temporary financial challenges that prevent them from paying rent on time.
Marjy Stagmeier founded the group after studying the local crisis. She realized that eviction often hurts stable residents rather than just solving income problems for landlords.
She said many tenants struggle because rising costs for essentials have outpaced salary increases. This forces tough choices between food and utilities.
The initiative expanded to include hundreds of apartment communities. These represent sixty-four thousand units that agree to keep rents affordable for low-income families.
Partners also assist workers during government shutdowns when their paychecks stop arriving. This prevents immediate displacement from their long-term residences.
Beyond housing help, the fund connects families with medical services. It also offers summer camps and food assistance to build stronger communities.
Many participants have gone on to become doctors and teachers. Stable housing allows people to earn good wages and escape poverty.
“Almost 100 families have elevated from renting to home ownership because we kept rents low so families can save their money.”
