Police officers helped deliver baby on roadside in Warrnambool

Two Warrnambool police officers helped a couple deliver a healthy baby on the side of the road near Dennington last week.

Sergeant Liam Cook and Constable Angus Hill were patrolling the Princes Highway early Monday morning. They stopped a speeding blue SUV just after two am that night.

The driver explained his wife was in labour right then. He asked if they could catch the baby instead of issuing fines immediately.

The expectant mother Jamie-Lee said Constable Hill held her hand while Sergeant Cook assisted her partner with the delivery of their second child. Within just two minutes the new baby girl named Ashlee was born safely on the roadside.

After emergency services arrived, the infant and parents were transported to the hospital for a standard safety check. The family reunited with the officers yesterday and gave them chocolates as a thank you for their help during the emergency.

The family lives about fifty kilometres outside Warrnambool and made it within four kilometres of the base hospital before the birth occurred. Sergeant Cook said while delivering a baby is not part of police training it highlighted how varied policing duties can be.

“We're lucky we had such great fellas to experience it with us”

Jamie-Lee
